Pencil Club Mentor Critique:

Wow, this is a huge undertaking! Bravo to you for braving new and undiscovered artistic territories for yourself!

As for critiques, I'd have to say the biggest thing that stands out (for me) without looking at your reference are the eyes. Although nicely done, they seem to be slanted upwards and not even in their slant with one another. Also, they're very dark. That in itself is not a bad thing (nicely done) but compared to the rest of the drawing, they're too dark and stand out above the rest. My personal opinion to fix this would be to darken the rest of the drawing to match the intensity of the eyes. His eyes also seem a little too large compared with the rest of his features. When I finally do switch to your reference to compare, his eyes are bigger than the reference. Or maybe it's the other proportions that are slightly off. Either way, just be sure to watch those proportions. Make sure they're all relative to one another. One way a fellow artist and friend once told me to help see if they're right is to turn the drawing upside down. If you do this during the sketch stage you'll notice mistakes a little more readily. Not sure of the science behind why (something about the way the eye/brain interpret things) but it helps you pick out your mistakes. And by doing this during the sketch stage rather than the finished stage, it will save you lots of time and effort fixing things. The main reference picture is also darker than your piece, giving an overall nice contrast balance. The skin shading base is darker in general than what you have here. I think if you darken it up you'll notice a huge difference. (or if this piece is finished, then on your next piece keep that in mind)

Also, the shape of his face is a little off compared to the ref pic. The ref pic his face seems to be slightly angled down, eyes looking up. Whereas with yours, it appears to be a straight on look. You have his face more oval than the reference pic, where it appears to be more of an upside down triangle (not as sharp, but the basic shape) His chin would also benefit from being a bit longer to more closely match the reference picture.

All in all, very gorgeous work done on the beard! Definitely not an easy task! His face should be darker and his beard should be lighter, then it would stand out more like in the reference picture and you wouldn't 'lose' his mouth to lack of contrast quite so much.

The nose could use more darker values and details as well to help bring it out. I would point out that the ref pic nose is crooked whereas yours is not. I wouldn't really say that's a mistake if you're trying to add a touch of your own creative interpretation. But if you're going for an exact (or as exact as can be) drawing of the ref, than that would be something to watch out for.

Hope this helps you out some and makes sense ;)
